CANADIAN ROCKIES SONGWRITING WORKSHOP

With STEVE GILLETTE

Come to the beautiful and scenic Rocky Mountains (Canmore, Alberta)
for a songwriting experience you will not forget.

 August 1- August 3, 2013

This two-day intensive workshop will cover a wide range of topics for all levels of songwriters.

Steve Gillette is the author of the book SONGWRITING AND THE CREATIVE PROCESS, published by The Sing Out Press. In this 200-page sourcebook there are many valuable insights on the work of songwriting. Steve has written detailed chapters on music theory, melody, harmony, rhythm, song critique, poetic principles, alliteration, titles, hooks, collaboration, creativity, writer's block, left brain and right brain, social issues, publishing, and surviving in the music industry.

Steve speaking about his workshops:  “I propose what I call the "Stack of plates theory."  The idea is that a song is a 'stack' of different elements, the rhythmic song, the story song, the rhyme scheme, the structure, melody, harmony, etc.  It's helpful to the writer to develop the ability to 'un-stack' the various layers of the song and see what's working and what's not.

Steve speaking about his critique sessions: “I find one thing to congratulate the writer for; good line, good idea, nice chord change, etc., and then focus on one area where another hour of work would help the song; better rhymes, better development of a second verse, possible bridge, nicer chord changes, etc.  I believe that working at being a better listener and a better editor helps you to be a better songwriter.

Also included are articles and interviews with Graham Nash, Tom Paxton, Len Chandler, Fred Koller, Butch Hancock, Mary McCaslin, Michael Smith, Lou & Peter Berryman, Bob Franke, Nancy White and many others.

In her introduction to the book Judy Collins wrote, "Use what you learn from this great book, you will get better as a songwriter: you can't fail!" Whether you are a beginner or an established professional this book is a practical resource for understanding and developing your creative potential.

Steve Gillette has performed in over 31 countries and has taught numerous workshops and seminars on songwriting, guitar theory, and record production.

Steve's songs have been sung by dozens of major artists including Garth Brooks, John Denver, Nanci Griffith, Waylon Jennings, Anne Murray, Kenny Rogers, Linda Ronstadt, Spanky and Our Gang, Don Williams, and Tammy Wynette.

His film credits include writing and singing the main title theme for M.G.M.'s The Outfit, Walt Disney's The Pond, The Grass Is Greener, Summer Run, and Door To Door. Steve has also written songs for the Walt Disney characters Jiminy Cricket, Dumbo, and Winnie the Pooh.
